Hypemann Reviews Voltron Legendary Defender

Voltron Is Roaring Again!

As I browse through Netflix trying to watch something that will pass time, I have stumbled upon a childhood memory. VOLTRON. For those kids who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, Voltron was a big deal. It was one of the top kids show along with Transformers, Power Rangers, and other kids shows before all the other distraction.

Now onto the latest iteration of the beloved show. This is technically the fifth series following the very child friendly Voltron Force. That one I have not seen at all. Fortunately for me this series has a more serious tone than it’s predecessor. I must admit, I have not been passionately watch anything animated for awhile now.

This version of Voltron is the perfect blend of space opera, drama, thrill, and comedy. The way the producers balanced all of them is quite admirable. Voltron has always been a fairly straight forward show, with its one-dimensional characters, flat storylines, and monster of the week format. But that was good enough for a time when things were simpler, and the brain of yours truly couldn’t fully comprehend things.

Space Opera Done Right!

First off, the Space Opera aspect of it has been fleshed out. They are finally space explorers with a ship, and war machines. They train, they interact with aliens, they find strange items, they are a cartoon version of Star Trek. Secondly, the Drama has been toned down in a sense that nothing feels melo-dramatic but rather the scenarios are more appropriate. It’s nothing extraordinary but it’s a scenario that is entertaining to say the least. And lastly the Comedy, the creators infuses humor to really create depth in each characters. They are not all one-note heroes that will always come together to save the day. They are individuals with different goals, and they show this beautifully with each and every episode through the humorous dialogue.

The action is what people really want to watch in Voltron. Nothing gets the blood boiling than Voltron slaying down a Ro-Beast. I was really impressed with the production value and the way they utilized not only Voltron but the Lions. They made the Lions, living breathing, killing machines with a subtle personality to boot.

Overall this show is worth watching and following, it doesn’t matter if you have no familiarity with Voltron or you are one of the Voltron Geeks like me. This show is top notch from the animation to action to dubbing. The team behind this series have shown their passion time and again with their crafty storytelling, compelling character creations, and visceral action sequences.

This show gets aย ๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Ž๐Ÿ’Žย Rating from yours truly.
